Talkiatry is a virtual psychiatry platform with a network of over 600 psychiatrists. It covers 43 states, but is not currently available in Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, New Mexico, North Dakota, Wyoming, or anywhere outside of the U.S. Talkiatry only accepts users with health insurance, including Medicare. The platform does have some therapists; however, they are only accessible if your psychiatrist includes therapy as part of your treatment.
The HelpGuide staff not only personally tested Talkiatry, we also surveyed 100 users to understand their experiences with the service. Here are some highlights from our survey:
To test the platform, our staff did the following:
Talkiatry’s sign-up takes 10-20 minutes for most users. However, nearly one in five of the users we surveyed waited at least a week for their first appointment. Here’s what happens:
The sign-up process was extremely easy. Talkiatry gave us a list of matching providers from which we chose a psychiatrist. However, the wait time for appointments seemed long. We selected the first available appointment, which was seven days away.
Insurance approval was granted only based on the name, age, and address we gave. We expect that insurance verification could be a little more difficult if you aren’t the primary on the insurance plan. In addition, we weren’t immediately told what the copay would be.
In our hands-on testing, we found that Talkiatry was easy to navigate. 90 percent of surveyed users agreed, saying they were satisfied with the usability of the platform. We encountered no technical issues during our testing period.
When we reached out to Talkiatry’s customer support, they responded within 24 hours. Customer support was very helpful and attentive to the question. They answered it thoughtfully and sent us additional resources in case we had follow-up questions. Again, our experience was backed up by the survey respondents. 84 percent of surveyed users said they were satisfied or very satisfied with Talkiatry’s customer support.
We did encounter one small issue: It’s important to log on for the initial appointment a few minutes early in order to complete the pre-session questionnaire, something that Talkiatry didn’t warn us about. Thankfully, we could skip a lot of the questions in order to not to be late for the appointment.

We didn’t switch psychiatrists during our testing phase. However, in our survey, 14 percent of respondents requested to switch providers. Of those, more than 90 percent felt the process of switching to a different provider was easy or very easy.
During the first session, the psychiatrist was late starting the session. However, she messaged us beforehand to let us know. Once we got started, the session still lasted for over 45 minutes. We were extremely impressed by her thoroughness. When we outlined our issues, the psychiatrist made us feel heard and validated. She also took the time to explain the different medication options. She was very open and clear about potential side effects and drawbacks of each medication, and she was responsive to all of the questions we had.
This positive experience with our psychiatrist was reflected in our June 2025 survey of Talkiatry users. 87 percent of respondents said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their psychiatrist’s responsiveness. 92 percent said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the medication management and psychiatric care they received overall.
The average cost of a psychiatry session of Talkiatry is a $15 to $30 copay. The cost depends entirely on your health insurance plan’s deductible. We ended up paying an insurance copay of $15, which we considered an excellent value for the service we received. 88 percent of the Talkiatry users we surveyed also rated the platform good value for money.
Here are the areas in which we felt Talkiatry stood out.
High quality providers. Overall, both our staff and our survey respondents were pleased with the standard of care and how well medications were explained by their providers on Talkiatry. Providers tended to also be very responsive to questions and concerns, and they regularly checked in on patients about side effects.
Easy sign-up process. Most of the surveyed users were able to move through the intake process in 20 minutes or less. There is a pre-session questionnaire that might require more time, but it’s possible to skip questions.
Easy insurance verification. In our hands-on testing, we also found that the insurance verification process was also quick and easy.
Although we were impressed with Talkiatry, no platform is perfect. Here are some areas in which the service could improve.
Wait times can be long. Our team member waited a week for his first appointment after signing up to the platform. 42 percent of our survey respondents also waited between four days and two weeks for their initial appointment. This might simply be due to the platform having a limited network of providers compared to the number of users.
Nine percent of respondents said they experienced surprise charges. This might indicate that the service could do a better job at communicating expenses upfront. For instance, during the hands-on testing, we weren’t immediately told what the copay would be.
The focus of the platform is most limited to psychiatry and medication management. If your psychiatrist suggests you need therapy as part of your treatment, they can refer you to a therapist—one on Talkiatry or outside of the platform. If you’re already aware that you need therapy as well as medication, it may be more straightforward to try a platform that offers online therapy and psychiatry.
Talkiatry scores high in user approval. If you’re using insurance, it’s a solid choice for psychiatry and medication management. However, you’ll need to be patient when it comes to appointment wait time. In addition, the platform isn’t available in every state or countries outside of the U.S.
