  • A HelpGuide staff member tested Talkspace’s therapy and psychiatry services for one month each.
  • In addition to testing the actual online therapy and online psychiatry services, we also tested things like scheduling, billing, customer service, and app features, including therapist messaging.
  • Prior to testing, the HelpGuide team spent many hours researching the Talkspace platform, looking at over 100 data points, including everything from therapist selection options to the way it protects your data.
  • HelpGuide also conducted surveys of over 200 real Talkspace users to validate our findings. These surveys covered both online therapy and online psychiatry.
  • Talkspace conveniently allows you to check your insurance coverage before having to create an account.
  • If you decide to sign-up, the process is straightforward. According to our survey results, it takes 10 to 20 minutes for 80 percent of users.
  • While our tester thought the onboarding mental health questionnaires were necessarily thorough to ensure a good provider match, 33 percent of our survey respondents were frustrated by the length of the questionnaires.
  • After signing up, Talkspace matches you with a provider. It took just eight hours for our tester to get matched and he found his therapist to be an excellent fit. Our tester was able to schedule his first therapy appointment within two days. 90 percent of our survey respondents had their first session within six days of signing up.
  • Our tester reported his therapist was very responsive to his messages between sessions, replying within a few hours. 99 percent of our survey respondents were similarly satisfied with their therapist’s responsiveness.
  • Our tester rated the platform highly for usability on the mobile and desktop site, as well as the Talkspace app. This was reflected in our survey results: 89 percent of users found navigating the platform easy or very easy.
  • Our testing didn’t reveal any notable technical issues. Similarly, only 22 percent of the Talkspace users we surveyed experienced a technical issue more than once. Most (66 percent) didn’t experience any glitches.

  • Talkspace accepts most major insurance plans and Medicare Part B for online therapy. The average insurance co-pay is $15-30 per session.
  • 78 percent of our online therapy survey respondents used insurance to pay for sessions on Talkspace. Nearly one-third of those didn’t have a co-pay.
  • Talkspace offers three tiers for out-of-pocket pricing: $69 per week for messaging-only therapy; $99 per week for one live session + messaging; $109 per week for one live session + messaging + access to live workshops. Extra live sessions can be purchased for $65 each.
  • Talkspace offers discounts if you choose to be billed quarterly or biannually.
  • Financial aid is available. 23 percent of our surveyed users were able to secure financial aid or discounted pricing.
  • 82 percent of users we surveyed rated the cost of therapy on Talkspace as good or very good value for the level of care they received.

  • Out-of-pocket psychiatry costs $299 for the initial appointment and $175 for each follow-up appointment.
  • As with most platforms, Talkspace psychiatric providers are unable to prescribe controlled substances (those that are most likely to be abused), like Xanax or Adderall. State laws can vary, but typically you’ll need to see a provider in-person in order to get a prescription for these medications.
